Ogunquit is a popular vacation resort which is situated on the coast of the state of Maine on the east coast of the United States. The name "Ogunquit" had the meaning of coastal lagoon to the Abenaki Indians and it dates from 1641. It has a small population of just over 1,000 people but in the peak months of July and August it attracts over 100,000 people into the town.
The area is unique in that it has no branded stores in the area, these related to large hotel chains such as Hilton and Best Western and restaurants such as Pizza Hut and Mc Donald's. The whole area is made up of local business and the amount of hotels allowed is controlled so that the area does not become too overpopulated in the summer months.
Ogunquit is a perfect place for a relaxing vacation, everything within the town is within walking distance. This includes over 87 restaurants, a world class beach, numerous shops and local attractions.
A couple of the more popular tourist attractions are Marginal Way and Perkins Cove. The Marginal Way walk is known to be one of the most scenic walks on the east coast of the United States. The walk is over a mile in length and it goes from the pristine sand of the local beach in the beautiful area of Perkins Cove.
There are numerous small rock pools and miniature beaches to enjoy along the way as well as some breathtaking panoramic views of the beautiful coastline. There are also benchs for those who need to take a break along the way.
At the end of the walk (if you start from the beach side) you will come to Perkins Cove. This is a popular place for good restaurants and its is also a nice location to take a book and relax in, enjoying the scenic and peaceful surroundings.
A number of the restaurants have outdoor eating areas which have sea views and there you can get some of the freshest seafood in the state. A couple of the most popular places are Barnacle Billy's and Mc Perkins. At Barnacle Billy's you can get some excellent lobster or fresh fish or scallops. There is a small outdoor eating area which has views of all the lobster boats coming in and it is a nice location in the sunny summer months. Mc Perkins is the sister restaurant of the award wining Arrows restaurant and there you will an excellent selection of fine dining options at an affordable price. Again the location is excellent as it look out onto the sea.
Of course you will need more than one day in Ogunquit to enjoy the many restaurants and attractions that are available in the area. There are numerous options available for accommodation in the area with a large selection of high quality hotels and small bed and breakfasts.
One of the best places to stay in the area is the Admirals Inn, it has a bed and breakfast informal feel but has the facilities of a 4 star hotel. The resort has a total of 3 buildings, one building is family friendly and another is for adults only!
There are 2 heated pool, 2 Jacuzzis, a gym, sauna and spa facilities on site and the rooms vary from small cosy queen rooms to luxury Jacuzzi suites. The rates vary depending on the season with Queen rooms for as low as $69 in the off season and then up to $189 in the peak season.
Other popular Ogunquit hotels in are the Beachmere Inn which is right on the sea and the Anchorage by the sea, both have excellent facilities and are well recommended by travelers.
