Increase Your Eco Awareness at the Eden Project During a Cornwall Cottage Break

By Dipika Patel

For a day trip like no other during your holiday in a Cornwall cottage, why not visit the Eden Project?

The environmental development in the hamlet of Bedelva was set up to remind people about their connection to the natural world and highlight how humans rely on it to live. It's a great family day out if you've booked a cottage break by the sea and combines indoor and outdoor exhibits.

One of the UK's top eco tourist attractions, the Eden Project could be a great place to learn and have fun during a self catering Cornwall holiday. At the centre you'll find a combination of horticultural, musical and artistic displays to take in.

The land on which the project has been developed was once mining ground where only gorse would grow. Now, more than 100,000 different types of plant are nurtured on the site, making for some fantastic gardens full of colour and rare flora.

In between the greenery you'll spot art works that aim to challenge visitors to think about environmental and social issues, as well as enhancing the landscape. Also at the centre are a number of biomes - clear domes that you can walk around in and experience the climate of other countries.

In the rainforest biome you can feel the humid temperatures of south-east Asia, west Africa and tropical South America and take in the sight of indigenous plants and exhibits of sugar cane, bananas and coffee that aim to show the connection between these far-off lands with the UK, which imports such produce from warmer regions.

Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean Biome, you'll see the vibrant colours of citrus fruits growing on trees alongside olives and vines that are common to Mediterranean climates.

The project holds all kinds of events and sessions during the year, so check the programme before your visit. Youngsters might enjoy a day of den-making outdoors, connecting with nature and burning off some energy, while whole families could find lessons on how to grow your own fruit and vegetables interesting.

At the centre you'll also find plenty of musical performances are given, so you might like to make sure your visit coincides with a gig by one of the most famous acts of modern times that play during the outdoor Eden Sessions.

You're sure to find something to interest every member of the family on a day out at the top tourist attraction.
